Morgan Rogers saw a late winner denied at Aston Villa as Unai Emery’s side suffered a disappointing Champions League clash with Juventus.
Emery, now enduring his longest winless spell as Villa boss since taking over from Steven Gerrard in 2022, watched from the sidelines as his players struggled in the final third.
Lucas Digne came close to opening the scoring after his free-kick hit the crossbar just before the break. Ollie Watkins threatened again but saw his shot denied by Michele Di Gregorio in the Juventus goal.
Tensions at Villa Park continued to rise as time went on – but frustrations also set in. The players ran out of steam in the final third, which has been a constant problem throughout the seven-game stretch.
Juventus did not threaten much of the match but when they did, Francisco Conceicao was involved. Emiliano Martinez’s outstretched arm was all that stopped the No. 7 from putting his side ahead just after the hour mark.
Di Gregorio was called into action to deny John McGinn from close range but in the end the hosts didn’t do enough in the final third – and they almost had to defend themselves.
Morgan Rogers thought he had clinched victory in the dying match, but his celebrations were cut short – after a long period of chaos in the ring – due to a foul in the build-up. An election that only added to the misery of the people at home.
Thoughts will now turn to how Emery and his coaching staff can deal with this problem but the prospect of doing so at Chelsea, stay on Sky Sportsthis week is very difficult.
