With Stewart, according to the US government, it tells its story in a notable book packed with more classified drone operations for public release than any other account. The only thing to die to interview Brett Velikovich about Eric Bleham, The New York Times Bestseller Fearless’s award -winning writer and drone Warrier.
Eric Bleham: While writing this book, how do both of you run the line required to tell an accurate and compelling story, but it also does not disclose information that can endanger our warriors and success in future operations?
Brett Velikovich: The Defense Department Pre-Publication Safety Review Office (DOPSR) spent about 22 months leaving the manuscript. It took me longer to get the book through the approval process, as it took me to write. Finally, representatives of the Pentagon said that this book has approved more classified drone operations for public release, which they have ever worked to clarify any other book.
EB: What about drones that first attracts you in this world?
BV: In 2004, as a young specialist in Afghanistan, a contingent of special forces let me fly my RQ -11 Reven out of our safe house in Jalalabad. We threw it into the air and saw that it was a few hundred feet above streaming the live video of the lower area. I was blown away.
EB: In the book, I was killed by combining stunning techniques in drones and a combination of deep detective work occupying each kill and mission. How did a specific mission come out?
BV: Our success and accuracy in finding goals came from large -scale intelligence data, which we had access to years and interconnected networks and individuals who worked countless hours to ensure that people at my level, did not have obstacles in our way of doing our work: Hunting the enemy.
EB: We all have heard of the emotional toll done by soldiers in war areas. How did such a war happen-being in a slow-light box about twenty-four hours a day, watching a dozen tv related to drones-affects you?
BV: Every soldier has his own shock to deal with, and I could not put myself in place of those who were kicking the door down or walking through bullets through bullets, which we had chosen. Those people are the closest things for supernatural, if they were not fighting for their country then they would be professional athletes. My emotional toll was slightly different as an Intel man, it was not one where I came back from the war and I regret all the things I did. I loved my work every minute. The psychological toll that I had to overcome came on my shoulders with this constant feeling in the world weight war areas. The feeling that if my team did not get that terrorist that day, he was living another day to hurt American soldiers or innocent citizens. Those things kept me at night.
EB: Drons are becoming more and more sophisticated with large retailers and their technology being more easily available, what are the risks of terrorist groups using drones against us?
BV: We are already looking at the risks of terrorists, who in the last few years hold our hands on the same capabilities due to the vast spread of drone technology. The ISIS consumer is taking drones and modifies them in a way to attack the coalition soldiers. They are modifying drones with instantaneous explosives and creating a trigger mechanism to release them from air, while all film attacks for their social media promotion. It goes to show you how capable of off-the-shelf drone technology in the wrong hands.
EB: You finish the book using a drone to combat wildlife hunters in Africa, and you are also helping to train Somalia government in drone monitoring and anti -terrorism; How is your current work a reflection of our drone-rich future?
BV: I am currently a big lawyer in the drone industry to share that technique with the right people who can use it to help create positive effects. One of those vast issues is wildlife protection, we have a project called The African Eye, where we are in the process of re-introducing the same technique used for war and use it to fight the predators that destroy these eco-system in East Africa.
