Winner of Pulitzer Award for History
For many years, there was no single volume covering the “history of the West”. Paxon’s masterwork fixes this problem with an essential, comprehensive account of expansion from the US west and west from-1763–1893.
The American pioneer is moved to every extent in fifty-nine chapters for about 150 years. Full of world-class insights, Paxon depicted a picture of how the land mass of the United States was settled-to start with English settlers in England to end in the entire continent and to end with the sunshine of California.
The literary talent of the packson does not shine in quotes from secondary and source materials; He has made his content a part of his own. In fact, instead of being in line with a social history, Paxson takes a historical, geographical and practical approach to the west. He struggles with Louisiana purchasing American history for freedom, struggle with original Americans and civil war, presidential positions from Washington to Roosevelt, and even provides deep information about the functioning of Frontier Finance and Canal and Railroad Corporation.
“Future historians would gratefully remember Mr. Paxon to essay a task, which others had either shirked or felt disabled to perform themselves.”
It must be read for any student of American history.
