A super-cool experiment: how to freeze water immediately

step 1step 1

Stir two plastic water bottles in a large ice bowl

Keep the bottles closer to the center of the bowl and bury it in as much ice as possible.

step 2step 2

Hold some rock salt!

Spread a generous amount of rock salt on the surface of the ice.

step 3step 3

Monitor the temperature

Put a thermometer in the ice between the bottles. The temperature will fall slowly in the next half an hour. Add more ice and salt to keep the bottles buried. Once the temperature reaches 17 degrees F, go to the next step.

step 4step 4

Immediate freeze!

After the water cools down for 10 minutes, extract a bottle from the ice gently. Strike rapidly under the bottle against the table and the ice crystal should immediately become near the top of the bottle and quickly go down through the liquid, converting it into a solid mass of ice. The twist open the second bottle cap and the water will freeze from the bottom.
