A puppy abused by a man at a Buddhist retreat in China has been taken after a video of the incident sparked outrage on national television earlier this month.

Saving: The owner of the hospital ChinaA Tianjin resident named Cui, who saw the video, said he traveled 400 kilometers (248 miles) overnight to reach the site on Nov. 12 to rescue the puppy after paying the owner 300 yuan ($42). Another woman, a Douyin user named Yueyue, contacted Cui soon after, telling him she wanted to adopt the puppy. The latter traveled from Shenyang, Liaoning province, to Tianjin to pick up the puppy, whom he named “Luoyi” – “luo” being the name of the temple and “yi” meaning “convert to Buddhism” – on Nov. 15.
