At least nine Palestinians have been killed in a new attack by the Israeli army on the central Gaza Strip, according to media reports since Thursday.
The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the shelling in the Nuseirat refugee district also left many people injured.
An Israeli army spokesman said the army was investigating the reports.
A famous building was also destroyed in Nuseirat, according to residents there.
The health authority in Gaza, controlled by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, said that since the fighting began nearly 14 months ago, more than 44,200 people in the Gaza Strip have been killed and about 105,000 injured. These figures do not distinguish between civilians and soldiers.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday evening that the army had “killed about 20,000 terrorists” in the Gaza Strip.
Information on both sides cannot be independently verified.
