Northerners across the American continent can see more than just a star-filled sky. They can see the aurora borealis – aka the northern lights – once again on Thanksgiving! On Thursday, November 28, northern countries may be given pink and green colors like in October due to geomagnetic storms. So, will the northern lights be visible to you on Thanksgiving?

What is a Geomagnetic Storm?
Geomagnetic storms are “large-scale disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere that occur when there is a strong transfer of energy from the solar wind to the Earth’s atmosphere,” according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They create from “variations in the solar wind” that can change “currents, plasmas and fields in the Earth’s magnetosphere,” on the website.
When a major geomagnetic storm occurs, NOAA warns that it could disrupt the power grid. This may cause the power to go out.

Where to See the Northern Lights on Thanksgiving 2024
According to the Associated Press, residents of Washington, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine can see the auroras. The northern states of New York, Wyoming, New Hampshire and Vermont may also see lights if they are lucky.
People living in Canada and Northern Europe can also see the aurora borealis on November 28.
