Winning one world title is difficult but coming back takes a whole new mindset. That’s what Luke Humphries is set to unveil when he visits Alexandra Palace in December.
Not many in the game have finished – only Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, and Gary Anderson have successfully retained their title in consecutive years.
Indeed, known as one of the most difficult things to achieve, a world champion often goes into competition with a target on their back.
However, if a player is not only a two-time world champion but back-to-back years, he can become one of the greatest in the sport, something Humphries wants to add to his ever-growing CV as he continues. making his “heritage”.
“I think it can be a complete nightmare that you feel like you’re never going to wake up from,” Humphries said.
“When you become a World Champion once, it’s always amazing, but when you become a two-time champion, it puts you at the top of the list of players who have ever played the game.
“It’s always nice to win one, but to win a second, it puts you in the legacy of the greatest players of all time.
“This would be a good statement for me to be a two-time World Champion before I turn 30 years old [Humphries turns 30 in February]. It has been a good example for me to move forward and win more in the future, but it will be difficult.
“You want to continue and do it again. The intensity of the game, you have to think, try and get as many as you can before the new generation comes.
You’re a great player but you’ve never been in the top four or anything. That’s what can happen.
“As I said, I’m on a very heavy road and I’m playing well in the last 18 months. So it’s a great opportunity to continue and try to get as many titles as possible.”
Of course, as a young player in the game Humphries has time on his side to add international titles to his cabinet but now that he knows what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage, he wants to take advantage of it as soon as possible. .
“Yes, I have a lot of years left, but when I’m in this form, when I win these races and I’m at the top of my game, I feel like you want to take advantage of the road. You’re playing to win more,” added Humphries.
“The way I was playing last year, it would have been easy for me to think that I was going to win, but I thought that winning major tournaments and winning the World Championship are two different things.
“It’s very difficult. I didn’t realize how difficult it was, but it was mentally difficult. I increased my chances in minutes and maybe I have to do it this year if I win, but you have to. Believe in yourself.
“The best thing for me is to take it from there as best I know how to.”
