Esme is born in the world of words. Motherless and irreversibly curious, she spends her childhood in the scriptorium, an Oxford Garden shed in which a team of her father and dedicated lexicographers is collecting words for the Oxford English dictionary long ago. The place of the young Esma is under the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word Bondmad Floater under the table. She saves the slip and knowing that the word means “slave girl”, starts collecting other words that have been renounced or neglected by the dictionary men.
As she grows up, Esma realizes that words and meanings related to the experiences of women and common people often become uncontrolled. And so she begins in Bayana to find words for her own dictionary: The Dictionary of Lost Words. To do this, he should leave the university’s shelter world and enter ventures to meet those whose words will fill those pages.
During the height of the women’s franchise movement and with great war, dictionary of lost words reveals a lost story, hidden between the lines of history written by men. Inspired by real events, author Pip Williams has entered the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story. The dictionary of Lost Words is a delightful, lyrical, and a deep-thoughting celebration of words and the power of the language for shaping the world.
