I am The bad guy is ruling the box office this week, fans are losing their Shiz while the villain is largely responsible for the fall in the middle Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). The case is being laid on the sister of the bejeweled shoes. But with some big bad things revealed at the end of the first episode of the two-parter, are the claims that Nessarose (Marissa Bode) is coming (“it” being Dorothy’s house that has landed on her) valid?
The Witch of the East – who became known as Nessarose – being crushed by Dorothy’s farmhouse is the canon event that has become the main setting for each adaptation. Wizard of Oz. A Kansas tornado carries a house over a rainbow; it falls to the witch with only her feet peeking out, prompting Dorothy to grab her famous slippers. That sets up a series of events that lead to the death of the Wicked Witch of the West and the melting of water.
We now know that the evil Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) has power over the weather (Tornadoes) and that the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) is a fraud, but The bad guy established the idea that the Wicked Witch of the East is Nessarose – and her boots are not going to be powerful at this point?
The clue is how Nessarose treats Elphaba throughout the film. As a TikTok commentator (like @aspoonfulofchae below) jokingly says, “I’m on the side of the house, the house didn’t do anything wrong,” reading Nessa for the scandals in her hot take.
The facts are explained. Nessa didn’t treat Elphaba as well as their father did, and it’s safe to say that she couldn’t wait to leave Shiz to start over without her help, until Morrible put an end to their father’s strange idea of having Nessa go. college? I mean, what was Elphie doing in Munchkinland when she was running things like the Mayor? Was she just hiding him? He had talent and Nessa was furious when she jumped to his defense and got a special welcome from Shiz and Morrible as his mentor. He didn’t like his sister at all, and that’s amazing!
Then there’s Nessa’s thirst for Boq and credit to Glinda for setting them up on the Ozdust playground; even though she knew all along “because I’m in this chair and you felt sorry for me,” she continued to let him set her down, you know. In addition to showing her hand as the most Wicked Witch from the jump, when Elphaba shows up and interrupts her date with Boq she does nothing to stand up for him when the rest of the gang gets rid of her sister. HIS NECK! The reduction runs deep here and it’s no wonder that their mother’s shoes are in place Villain Part Two when Dorothy took them.
Not to get too into spoilers Villain Part TwoNessarose’s shoes are decorated in a way that allows her to rise as the Witch of the East before Dorothy comes along, that’s a given. The second project of the musical jumps a little further into the future and will follow Nessa as she has to take over the reins from her father in Munchkinland – and take the joy out of it. The Wizard of Oz at the end of it, he makes a big change for the worse. They do not like the Thropp family and perhaps their joy at being freed comes from their evil father.
There is much for Nessarose and Elphaba to smoke for their people when even their mother did not love their father to be faithful. They have all lived their whole lives. Nessa’s role in the story transcends the obvious ways that allow her to be a person more prominent than her disability, and her story plays with the self-suspension related to her disability in the same way that Elphaba’s obsession plays with issues of racism. Every woman’s relationship with people, from those roles, is what she changes through magic Part Two. This is where the story shows how real evil can come from the human flaws that everyone is allowed to have.
And, we should give it a chance to see that Nessarose came to terms with her father’s story about Elphaba and how she is a bad person here as well. We’re glad he died when he saw Eliphaba rise to her power in “Defying Gravity;” And Nessa seems to be upset that their family’s reputation has been ruined.
Although The bad guy not being an official prequel Wizard of Oz this film, these types of people feel small and give you more roots (also) in its interpretation actually happened that led to Dorothy killing the Wicked Witch of the West.
Elphaba isn’t actually a dog hating Mrs. Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West from 1939. Oz film (as portrayed by Margaret Hamilton). Instead, he’s like a Marvel version whose story takes place as a hero with some fixed points, including his desire for his sister Nessarose’s shoes after they’ve been duly covered by Dorothy’s house.
Of course, however, a big favor to Marissa Bode for the amazing job of doing and sowing the seeds of the Wicked Witch of the East – because even after her inevitable fate, her presence remains, causing all the drama between Elphaba and Glinda on shiny heels as a child. snatch them up.
Bad is now in theaters as well Villain Part Two opens Thanksgiving 2025.
